As we improve our tackle and techniques to catch trophy salmon, fishing with a proper “leader saver” is a common practice. These days buying one does not mean you can rely on the leader saver when a large fish strikes your hook. Most often snaps break and crimps slip and your back to re-tying for the next fish.

The

Cutting and crimping pliers like the Sportgear “Power Pliers” will allow you to cut steel wire and crimp with very little effort. The pliers have a short one inch tip which will allow you to crimp very easy and maximize the force applied to the connection. Also to mention, the spring between the handles will also benefit the user as it will help the pliers open again after you have done the work and hence reduce your work in half.

Wire Size

Find the best nylon coated wire for your application. Berkley Steelon Nylon Coated Wire is the best to use as it is readily available and the nylon wire has no memory and thus make leaders more straight.

We use 45lb (Dia. .028) OR 80LB (Dia. .038) wire. Match these wire with Size 3 (15-45 lb) and Size 4 (60-80 lb) connector sleeves.
